| 3Com Voice Solution Outshines Competition to Revolutionize Campus-Wide Communications and Beef-Up Student Safety |
|
SANTA CLARA, Calif., January 29, 2002 – 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced that Lubbock Christian University is bolstering its communications and security using a $500,000 3Com® IP-based business telephone system. After evaluating systems from Cisco and Sanyo, Lubbock chose the 3Com SuperStack® 3 NBX® Networked Telephony Solution, which affordably delivers advanced telephone features over a single wiring infrastructure. Based on a 25-building campus in Lubbock, TX, Lubbock Christian University employs 400 staff and faculty and offers a unique curriculum to 1,850 students. The school awards a range of undergraduate degrees, including Christian bible studies and an Organizational Management program tailored to the nontraditional working student. The intimate but growing university provides classes with less than 25 students and supports an international student body seeking quality education with a personal touch. "We needed better, more secure communications than our preexisting Centrex and Dimension PBX phone systems provided to fulfill new federal emergency notification requirements," said Robert Smith, Lubbock's director of technology. "The reliability and superior price/performance of the 3Com solution allowed us to quickly meet every need – for substantially less than competing solutions. The system also allows us to expand quickly to meet the phenomenal growth of the university." Renowned for its plug-and-play setup and interoperability, the 3Com NBX family provides full-featured, premium-quality telephone communications over Ethernet networks, eliminating the cost of separate phone wiring and supporting up to 600 users and 750 ports. Secure,
Campus-Wide Communications Using the 3Com solution, Lubbock confidently meets new federal 911 regulations using the NBX system's e911 feature, which enables emergency units to know precisely from which building and room a 911 call originated. The university is further streamlining communications between the campus and the outside world by using automated attendants, voice mail and direct inward dialing (DID). Teachers also use the NBX system's call forwarding feature during the summer to direct calls to their homes, and Lubbock's admissions staff will use the PcXset headsets and CTI functionality to dial numbers from the computer and speed recruiting efforts. Lubbock's IT team is effortlessly handling changes to the 3Com system with the browser-based NetSet™ administration tool and the university's baseball sportscasters will use NBX phones to call in broadcasts to radio stations. In addition, the system allows the IT team to set up telephone banks for fund-raisers and other events with only a small commitment of manpower and time. "Without 3Com's technology and cooperation, we could not have afforded the advanced communications we now enjoy," concluded Smith. "Thanks to the NBX solution, we've joined the telecommunications revolution while ensuring we measure up to federal requirements for campus-wide safety." About 3Com
